The University Heights Historical Society will offer a guided walking tour of selected bungalow courts in University Heights on Saturday, November 14, at 11 a.m., starting in front of the bungalow court at 4638-4648 North Avenue. Tickets are $25 each and must be purchased online in advance.
Bungalow courts are among San Diego’s most distinctive and historically important housing types. Developed primarily between 1920 and 1949, these modest residential groupings reflect the city’s response to rapid population growth and evolving patterns of urban living. Their characteristic arrangement of small homes organized around shared open space created a housing form that balanced density, affordability, and a strong sense of community. We’ll visit just a few of the approximately 70 courts in University Heights.
The tour will be led by Kristin Harms of the University Heights Historical Society and Architectural Historian Marlena Krcelich of South Environmental. Kristin will provide an overview of the early history of University Heights along the way, and Marlena will share insights about the unique architectural features of each bungalow court.
We will walk about 1 mile on some uneven pavement and sidewalks. No pets allowed. Rain will cancel.
